(12618) Cellarius is an asteroid of the outer main belt that was discovered on September 24, 1960 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery came about as part of the Palomar-Leiden survey , during which Tom Gehrels examined field plates recorded at the University of Leiden with the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory .

The asteroid was named on January 22, 2008 at the suggestion of Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld after the German astronomer, mathematician and cosmographer Andreas Cellarius (* around 1596; † 1665). In 1660 Cellarius published his richly illustrated sky atlas, the Harmonia Macrocosmica , later often referred to as the "Cellarius Atlas".
