(189398) Soemmerring is an asteroid of the main middle belt , which is located between Mars and Jupiter .
It was discovered on May 7, 2008 by the German amateur astronomers Stefan Karge and Rainer Kling from the Hans-Ludwig-Neumann-Observatory ( IAU-Code B01) on the Kleiner Feldberg in the Taunus .
The asteroid was named on July 26, 2010 in honor of Samuel Thomas von Soemmerring (1755–1830), a German anatomist , anthropologist , paleontologist and inventor . I.a. he discovered the yellow spot in the retina of the human eye and invented the electrochemical telegraph . Stefan Karge and Rainer Kling are members of the Physikalischer Verein - Society for Education and Science , which annually awards the Samuel Thomas von Soemmerring Prize for amateur astronomical work.
