(2944) Peyo is an asteroid of the middle main belt , which was discovered on August 31, 1935 by the German astronomer Karl Wilhelm Reinmuth at the State Observatory Heidelberg-Königstuhl ( IAU code 024).

The asteroid is in an 11: 4 orbital resonance with the planet Jupiter , which means that if the sun orbits Jupiter four times, the asteroid orbits the sun eleven times.

(2944) Peyo was named on April 6, 1993 after the Belgian comic artist Pierre Culliford (1928–1992), who became known as Peyo and whose most successful creation is " The Smurfs ". The naming after Peyo was suggested by the Belgian astronomer Jean Meeus , who also wrote the dedication text. The proposal was supported by the German astronomers Gerhard Klare and Lutz D. Schmadel .
