(2947) Kippenhahn ( 1955 QP 1 ; 1943 GC 1 ; 1955 SE ; 1973 YD 1 ) is an approximately eight kilometers large asteroid of the inner main belt , which was discovered on August 22, 1955 by the Dutch astronomer Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld at the State Observatory in Heidelberg -Königstuhl was discovered on the western summit of the Königstuhl near Heidelberg ( IAU code 024).

(2947) Kippenhahn was named after the Czechoslovak- German astronomer Rudolf Kippenhahn (* 1926), who was President of the Max Planck Institute for Physics and Vice President of the International Astronomical Union .
