(5194) Böttger is an asteroid of the central main belt that was discovered on September 24, 1960 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery came about as part of the Palomar-Leiden survey , during which Tom Gehrels examined field plates recorded at the University of Leiden with the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory .

The asteroid was named after the German naturalist and alchemist Johann Friedrich Böttger (1682–1719), who was best known for producing the first European porcelain , which he succeeded in 1708 with EW von Tschirnhaus .
