(5468) Hamatonbetsu is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 16 January 1988 by the Japanese astronomer Masaru Mukai and Masanori Takeishi at the observatory in Kagoshima was discovered. The asteroid was already observed on December 1, 1962 under the provisional designation 1962 XH at the Goethe Link Observatory in Brooklyn in the US state of Indiana .
The asteroid was named after the town of Hamatonbetsu in Esashi County on Hokkaidō , the place of residence of Masanori Takeishi.
