(56000) Mesopotamia is an asteroid of the main inner belt discovered by the Belgian astronomer Eric Walter Elst on September 20, 1998 at the La Silla Observatory of the European Southern Observatory in Chile ( IAU code 809).
The asteroid was named after Mesopotamia on November 10, 2003 .
