(6044) Hammer-Purgstall is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on September 13, 1991 by the German astronomers Freimut Börngen and Lutz D. Schmadel at the Thuringian State Observatory Tautenburg ( IAU code 033) in the Tautenburg Forest in Thuringia .

The asteroid is named after the Austrian diplomat and orientalist Joseph von Hammer-Purgstall (1774–1856), who is considered the founder of scientific Ottoman studies and an Austrian pioneer of oriental studies . He founded the Austrian Academy of Sciences in 1847 and was its first president from 1848 to 1849.
