(8122) Holbein is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on September 24, 1960 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery came about as part of the Palomar-Leiden survey , during which Tom Gehrels examined field plates recorded at the University of Leiden with the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory .
The asteroid belongs to the Nysa group, a group of asteroids named after (44) Nysa, which is also known as the Hertha family (after (135) Hertha).
(8122) Holbein was born on April 2, 1999 after the German painters Hans Holbein the Elder (~ 1465–1524), who is best known for his sacred works, and his son Hans Holbein the Younger (~ 1497–1543), the devoted himself more to portraiture , named.
