(8441) Lapponica is an asteroid of the inner main belt , which was discovered on October 16, 1977 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery took place during the 3rd Trojan survey, during which Tom Gehrels surveyed field plates recorded by the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory at the University of Leiden , 17 years after the start of the Palomar-Leiden- Surveys . Unconfirmed sightings of the asteroid had already been made on March 10, 1953 at the Goethe Link Observatory in Indiana .
The rotation of the asteroid was determined by Maurice Clark among others during observations from February 13 to 17, 2008 at the Montgomery College observatory in Rockville , Maryland . It came to a value of 3.275 h (± 0.001).
(8441) Lapponica was named on February 2, 1999 after the common woodcock , whose scientific name is ( Limosa lapponica ). As a winter guest, the common snipe was on the Dutch Red List of Endangered Birds. In 1994 only 2200 pairs of birds were counted in the Netherlands.
