(8775) Cristata is an asteroid of the main inner belt that was discovered on September 30, 1973 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery was made during the 2nd Trojan survey, during which Tom Gehrels surveyed field plates recorded with the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory at the University of Leiden , 13 years after the start of the Palomar-Leiden- Surveys .

Mean solar distance ( major semi-axis ), eccentricity and inclination of the orbit plane of the asteroid correspond to the Vesta family , a large group of asteroids named after (4) Vesta , the second largest asteroid and third largest celestial body in the main belt.

(8775) Cristata is after the crested lark named, whose scientific name Galerida cristata is. At the time the asteroid was named on February 2, 1999, the Great Crested Tit was on the Dutch Red List of Endangered Species .
