(8959) Oenanthe is an asteroid of the inner main belt that was discovered on September 24, 1960 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery came about as part of the Palomar-Leiden survey , during which Tom Gehrels examined field plates recorded at the University of Leiden with the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory .
According to the SMASS classification ( Small Main-Belt Asteroid Spectroscopic Survey ), a spectroscopic study by Gianluca Masi , Sergio Foglia and Richard P. Binzel at (8959) Oenanthe assumed a light surface, so it could, roughly speaking, be around trade an S asteroid .
(8959) Oenanthe is named after the wheatear , whose scientific name is Oenanthe oenanthe . At the time the asteroid was named on February 2, 1999, the wheatear was on the Dutch Red List of Endangered Species .
