(90414) Karpov is a main inner belt asteroid discovered on December 19, 2003 by the Spanish astronomer Rafael Ferrando at the Observatorio Pla D'Arguines ( IAU code 941) in Segorbe , Valencia Province .

It is believed that (90414) Karpov could broadly belong to the Vesta family , a large group of asteroids named after (4) Vesta , the second largest asteroid and third largest celestial body in the main belt. The timeless (non- osculating ) orbital elements of (90414) Karpov are almost identical to those of the larger asteroid (39255) 2000 YA 119, assuming the absolute brightness of 14.5 compared to 16.1 mag .

(90414) Karpov was named after Anatoli Karpov , the twelfth world chess champion . It was named on July 21, 2005. On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the 1984/85 World Chess Championship , Karpov played a rapid and blitz chess tournament against Garry Kasparov in Valencia in September 2009 . A group of astronomers from Segorbe with Rafael Ferrando presented Karpov with a poster depicting the asteroid and a stone replica of the asteroid during the tournament.
