1,2-Epoxybutane is a reactive chemical from the group of epoxides .
Isomers
The compound is chiral , there are two stereoisomers ( R ) -1,2-epoxybutane and ( S ) -1,2-epoxybutane. These pure enantiomers do not play a significant role, the technical product is a racemate [1: 1 mixture of ( R ) -1,2-epoxybutane and ( S ) -1,2-epoxybutane].
Extraction and presentation
1,2-Epoxybutane can be obtained by epoxidizing 1-butene with peroxyacetic acid .
properties
1,2-Epoxybutane is a highly flammable, volatile, colorless liquid with a slightly sweet odor that is soluble in water.
use
1,2-Epoxybutane is mainly used as an intermediate in the synthesis of fuel additives, nonionic surfactants , defoamers and various other products. It also serves as a stabilizer in chlorinated hydrocarbon solvents (for example trichlorethylene and 1,1,1-trichloroethane ).
safety instructions
The vapors of 1,2-epoxybutane can form an explosive mixture with air ( flash point −15 ° C, ignition temperature 370 ° C). The compound tends to polymerize spontaneously and there is a risk of explosion due to the formation of peroxides on contact with air.
