The 1st league , the third highest ice hockey division in Switzerland, of the 2012/13 season began in September 2012 and ends in March 2013. A total of 35 teams play in three regional groups. The defending champion is HC Red Ice .

The 35 teams in the first division are divided into three regional groups of 12 or 11 teams. With the exception of the final round, all games take place within these groups.

At the beginning of the season there is a qualifying round in which all 12 or 11 teams play twice against each opponent, thus completing 22 or 20 rounds. After qualification, each group is divided into a Masterround I and a Masterround II. Those ranked after the qualification 1-6 play in group Masterround I in a round-trip for the ranks 1 to 6 for the play-offs . Those ranked 7-12 after the qualification play in a round-trip round for the 2 playoff places 7 + 8 and for the ranks 9-12 for the relegation round. In Group I (Eastern Switzerland) and Group II (Central Switzerland) the points of the qualification are halved for the Masterround, in Group III (Suisse Romande) all points of the qualification round are included in the Masterround.

The play-offs will be held as a "best-of-five" series, with the winner of the playoff final qualifying for the finals of the Swiss amateur championship. The relegation round takes place in Group 1 (Eastern Switzerland) as a round trip. The teams start with the number of points according to the status at the end of Masterround II. The last placed in the relegation round will be relegated to the 2nd division for the next season. In Group II (Central Switzerland) the relegation round takes place in the form of a playout semi-final (best-of-five series) and a playout final (best-of-five series). The loser of the playout final is relegated to the 2nd division. There is no relegation round in Group III (Suisse Romande), as three clubs do not play relegation games.

Promotion to the National League B takes place:

• if a team meets the criteria of the National League,
• reported the desire for promotion before the season and,
• wins the Swiss amateur championship title.

In the final round, the three group winners compete against each other. After a group stage (three games), the two best teams play in the final for the title of Swiss amateur champions.
