chronology
Ryan Adams 1989 -

1989 is the fifteenth studio album by the American singer-songwriter Ryan Adams , which was released on September 21, 2015 on his label PAX AM . The album is a full cover of Taylor Swift 's album of the same name , released a year earlier. 1989 debuted at number seven on the Billboard 200 , one position ahead of Swift's 1989 , which by then had been in the charts for 48 weeks.

background

Adams met Taylor Swift's album while coming to terms with the failure of his marriage to Mandy Moore . When asked what attracted him to Swift's album, Adams said it just exuded a joy and described the album as an alternate universe of its own. Adams initially described his album as being similar to The Smiths' music . During the recording, he said he found a mix between Bruce Springsteen's Darkness on the Edge of Town and Meat Is Murder from The Smiths.

Reception by Taylor Swift

On the day Adams announced his project, Swift said enthusiastically on Twitter : "Cool, I won't be able to sleep again today or ever and I will celebrate this day as a holiday every year."

Two weeks later, an official announcement appeared in Entertainment Weekly , whereupon Swift again expressed enthusiasm and anticipation.

One day after the album was released, Swift praised Adams' work in a joint interview. She pointed out that his interpretations were very different from their own and were not cover versions in the traditional sense.
