Disasters

Coin from Helike
  • Winter: A strong seaquake in the Gulf of Corinth triggers a tidal wave that completely destroys the important Greek city of Helike and kills almost all residents. The water does not flow back after the wave subsides, but forms a lagoon for several centuries, from which the ruins of the city protrude. The cities of Aigai , Olenos and Rhypes are also being abandoned by the population because of their desolate condition. This natural disaster is seen by some as the historical backdrop for the legend of the fall of Atlantis . Contemporaries associated it with the appearance of the Great Comet in 373 BC .
