4-methyl-2-pentanol is a chemical compound from the group of racemic alcohols . When 4-methyl-2-pentanol is mentioned in this article or in the scientific literature without a prefix , one means the 1: 1 mixture ( racemate ) of the two enantiomeric forms, i.e. ( R ) -4-methyl-2- pentanol and ( S ) -4-methyl-2-pentanol.
Extraction and presentation
4-Methyl-2-pentanol can be produced by reducing mesityl oxide in acetic acid solution with platinum as a catalyst .
properties
4-methyl-2-pentanol is a slightly volatile, flammable, colorless liquid with a sweet odor that is not very soluble in water. It decomposes when heated.
use
4-Methyl-2-pentanol is mainly used for the production of lubricating oil additives and as a frother for the flotation of metal ores. It is also used as an internal standard for characterizing a volatile fraction of wines.
safety instructions
The vapors of 4-methyl-2-pentanol can form an explosive mixture with air ( flash point 40.5 ° C, ignition temperature 335 ° C).
