8th German Bundestag

The 8th German Bundestag existed between December 14, 1976 and November 4, 1980. In total, the 8th German Bundestag met in 230 sessions, with the last session taking place on July 4, 1980. The 8th Bundestag was constituted by the 1976 Bundestag election , which took place on October 3, 1976. Due to an amendment to the Basic Law passed in the same year, it was the last Bundestag to be elected more than 30 days before the end of the electoral term.

The senior president was Ludwig Erhard from the CDU ( former Federal Chancellor).

On December 15, 1976, the 8th Bundestag elected Helmut Schmidt ( SPD ) with 250 (+11) yes-votes, 243 (+11) no-votes, 1 abstention and one invalid vote in the first ballot for Federal Chancellor .

A total of 518 seats

The 8th Bundestag had a total of 496 members at the beginning and at the end of the legislative period (+22 members of the Berlin Bundestag ). The CDU / CSU had the highest share of seats with 243 (+11) seats (end: 253), followed by the SPD with 214 (+10) seats. In addition, the FDP (39 + 1 seats) were represented in the 8th Bundestag . Due to the resignation of MPs, there was at times a total of 1 non-attached MP .

Presidium of the Bundestag

Karl Carstens was elected President of the Bundestag in the first session with 346 votes in favor, 110 against and 24 abstentions. 36 votes were invalid. After he was elected Federal President , he resigned on May 31, 1979. Richard Stücklen was elected as his successor that same day .

A total of 485 legislative initiatives were introduced in the Bundestag, of which 322 are based on government proposals, 52 on initiatives by the Bundesrat and 111 on initiatives by the Bundestag. A total of 354 laws were passed by the Bundestag during the 8th legislative period and 339 laws were promulgated.
