The 3rd  German Bundestag existed between October 15, 1957 and October 15, 1961. The 3rd German Bundestag held a total of 168 sessions, with the last session taking place on August 22, 1961. The 3rd Bundestag was constituted by the 1957 Bundestag election , which took place on September 15, 1957.

The senior president was Marie Elisabeth Lüders from the FDP for the MP Konrad Adenauer ( CDU ), who as Federal Chancellor did not want to exercise the dignity of the senior president.

On October 22, 1957, the 3rd Bundestag elected Konrad Adenauer with 274 (+8) yes-votes, 193 (+13) no-votes, and 9 abstentions in the first ballot for Federal Chancellor.

A total of 519 seats

The 3rd Bundestag had a total of 497 MPs at the beginning and at the end of the legislative period (+22 Berlin Bundestag MPs ). The CDU / CSU had the highest share of seats with 270 (+7) seats (end: 289), followed by the SPD with 169 (+12) seats (end: 180). In addition, the FDP (41 + 2 seats, 45 seats at the end), the DP (17 seats, 0 seats at the end) and the FDV were represented in the 3rd Bundestag with a Berlin representative (without voting rights). Due to the resignation of MPs, there were at times a total of 5 non-attached MPs .

Conference locations

The constituent session of the Bundestag on October 15, 1957 took place in the Berlin Congress Hall. In the plenary week from October 1st to 3rd, 1958, the Bundestag met again for its 41st, 42nd and 43rd sessions in Berlin, as it did in 1955 and 1956 in the large lecture hall of the Physics Institute of the Technical University . Otherwise, the Bundestag met in this electoral term in Bonn's Bundeshaus , whose plenary hall was demolished in 1987.
