9th German Bundestag

The 9th  German Bundestag existed between November 4, 1980 and March 29, 1983. In total, the 9th German Bundestag met in 142 sessions, with the last session taking place on January 20, 1983. The 9th Bundestag was constituted by the 1980 Bundestag election , which took place on October 5, 1980.

The age president was Herbert Wehner ( SPD ), chairman of the SPD parliamentary group.

On November 5, 1980, the 9th Bundestag elected Helmut Schmidt (SPD) with 266 (+11) yes-votes, 222 (+11) no-votes and 2 abstentions in the first ballot for Federal Chancellor . There was 1 invalid vote. Schmidt's term of office ended on October 1, 1982 with a constructive vote of no confidence , with which Helmut Kohl ( CDU ) was elected Chancellor. Then Kohl ensured through a vote of confidence under Article 68 of the Basic Law , which - as intended - did not find a majority in the Bundestag on December 17, 1982, that Federal President Karl Carstens on January 7, 1983, the dissolution of the Bundestag and new elections for March 6 1983 could order.

The CDU / CSU had the highest share of seats with 226 (+11 Berlin) seats (237 in total), followed by the SPD with 218 (+10) seats (228 in total, 225 at the end of the legislative period).
