A161 is the former number of a trunk road of regional importance in southern Siberia , Russia . It leads from the capital of the Republic of Khakassia Abakan to the small town of Ak-Dowurak in the west of Tuva and is one of the two roads that connect this republic to the road network of the Russian Federation.

course

Sayansky Pass ( 2206  m ), view from Tuva to Khakassia (to the north)

From Abakan, where there is a connection to the R257 Yenisei main road running from Krasnoyarsk via the Tuvan capital Kyzyl to the Mongolian border, the road initially follows the Yenisei tributary Abakan on its left (western) side for about 130 kilometers , past the larger towns of Askis ( District administrative center ) and Beltirskoje . At the village of Ust-Jes it leaves the river and follows the left tributary Taschtyp upwards to cross it at the village of the same name and Rajonzentrum Taschtyp . The Abakan is reached again via a nearly 1000  m high pass at the mining town of Abasa , the end point of a railway line , and crossed there.

After overcoming two further passes (a good 1000  m and 1200  m high) the road reaches the right Abakan tributary Ona after about 50 kilometers and follows it, crossing it four times, and later the right tributary Großer On (Bolshoi On) bis in its headwaters after another 100 kilometers. There, after a steep ascent, the main ridge of the Western Sayan , whose ridge line marks the border between Khakassia and Tuva, is crossed with the 2206  m high Sajanski Pass . As a rule, the pass must be kept free of snow with a clearing device between September and May.

On the Tuvinian side, the road drops steeply into the valley of the Kara-Sug , a source of the left Chemchik tributary Ak-Sug . The road follows Kara-Sug and Ak-Sug in their narrow valleys through the Alasch highlands (Russian: Alaschskoje nagorje ) until it crosses a 1200  m high pass into the nearby valley of the more western Chemchik tributary Alasch . After another 30 kilometers and two lower passes, the end point of the Ak-Dowurak road is reached. On the almost 250 kilometers between Abasa and Abakan, there are no significant towns.

Shortly before Ak-Dowurak, the road joins the former A162 (since 2010 93N-17 / 93K-02), the main artery of the western Tuva Republic from Teeli to Kyzyl, which connects four of the five cities of the republic.

history

The A161 was created in the 1960s out of the need to create a shorter connection from Khakassia to the western part of the Tuva Republic than via the existing M 54, which runs much further east. The main reason for the construction was the connection of the large asbestos mine at Ak-Dowurak to the railway line at Abasa, which is almost 250 kilometers away. The street opened in 1969.

In 2010 the number A161 was reassigned to a federal road in a completely different part of Russia: the former A301 from Vladikavkas to the Georgian border in the North Caucasus . The connection Abakan - Ak-Dowurak was given the number 95K-002 under the administration of Khakassia as a trunk road of regional importance on the section to Abasa, on the section from Abasa to Ak-Dowurak, which is operated by the Republic of Tuva, although mostly running on Khakassian territory , the number 93K-01.
