Abie Grossfeld

Abraham Israel "Abie" Grossfeld (also Grossfield ) (* 1. March 1934 in New York City , New York ) is a retired American gymnast and gymnastics coach .

Life

Grossfeld was an "all-rounder" in high school (sprint, high jump, bike race, swimming, diving). At the age of 16, he was awarded the New York Maritime Benevolent Association Medal in 1951 for jumping into the freezing river in winter and saving a five-year-old from drowning . After graduating from high school, he joined the University of Illinois , won four US university championships , came second three times and third three times in various gymnastics disciplines. In 1956 and 1960 he took part in the Summer Olympics and in 1958 in the World Gymnastics Championships . He successfully participated in the Pan American Games in 1955 , 1959 and 1963, and in the Maccabiade in 1953, 1957 and 1965.

After his bachelor's degree in 1960, he continued his studies and also completed his master's degree in physical exercise in 1962. He won four American Championships of the Amateur Athletic Union . After retiring from active competitive sports, he became the director of the sports institute (professor) at Southern Connecticut State University and the university's gymnastics coach. Here he built a successful gymnastics program. 148 of his gymnasts were named All-American . He was selected as the gymnastics coach for the Olympic teams of 1964, 1972, 1984 and 1988.
