Everything about Elly ( Persian درباره الیDarbāre-ye Elī ), also known in German-speaking countries as Elly ... , is a feature film by the Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi . The film portrays the Iranian middle class, whose moral concepts it carefully questions.

action

Ahmad, who has spent a few years in Germany and is recently divorced, is on vacation in Iran. He spends a weekend with some friends on the Caspian Sea , where his friends introduce him to Elly, who praise her in high tones. After one of the children almost drowned while playing in the sea, the group notices that Elly has disappeared.

It is believed that she tried to save the child. Even when night fell, Elly still hasn't shown up. The mood changes. You worry about the fact that she could just have driven away without saying goodbye. It later turns out that she is already engaged. When notifying the fiancé, the friends get caught up in lies. Finally, her body is discovered, she actually drowned.

criticism

Jan Schulz-Ojala from Tagesspiegel liked the fact that Farhadi did not approach his story with preconceived concepts, but rather remained open to the development of the material on its own. The film is "extremely exciting". For the Zeit reviewer Markus Zinsmaier, Elly is “focused and stylish”. From the middle of the film onwards, the film loses "in color, but not in intensity." Barbara Schweizerhof rated the work in epd Film as "confidently staged", "heavy on dialogue, but continuously exciting" and without an "alarmistic gesture of exposure". "If you look closely, you end up knowing Iran a little bit more." According to the criticism in the Tages-Anzeiger by Thomas Bodmer, Elly does not quite reach Farhadis Nader and Simin - a separation , but "will follow you for a long time." And : "As a viewer you are repeatedly forced to revise the opinion you have just made." "A master of subtly staged looks" is director Farhadi, said Jens Hinrichsen from film-dienst . The two women Golshifteh Farahani and Taraneh Alidousti set performance highlights. In the second half the plot sags "a bit" because the director doesn't give the characters enough sharpness. “Farhadi's film allows opposing readings: It is about a society that opens up cautiously and is threatened by regression; But it is also about a misunderstood concept of freedom (here the criticism is aimed at the western world), which disregards the wishes of others - and causes lack of freedom. "

Awards

In addition, the film was included in the list of nominees for the nomination for best foreign language film for the 2010 Academy Awards .
