The name Achrain refers to a group in Alberschwende ( 716  m above sea level ), which is located on both sides of Achrainstraße (L 49).

Origin of name

Achrain is a term used several times in Vorarlberg for localities, in addition to Alberschwende , Schwarzach and Dornbirn z. B. also in Kennelbach , Krumbach , Langen and Wolfurt .

The exact origin of the name "Achrain" in the municipality of Alberschwende is not certain. The name probably refers to the Schwarzach ("Ach") and the "Rain" in the sense of a terrain edge (to the Schwarzach). In the “ Provinzial-Handbuch von Tirol and Vorarlberg for the year 1847 ”. and in the “ Schematism for Tyrol and Vorarlberg ” Achrain is listed as a separate hamlet and part of Alberschwende.

Topography, geography, location and traffic

The geographical term Achrain is understood to mean the slope from the Ruschen plot in Dornbirn to Alberschwende over a distance of about 5 km as the crow flies, oriented from the southwest to the northeast and sloping towards the Schwarzach, largely parallel .

The hamlet of Achrain in the municipality of Alberschwende is a small part of it and can be easily reached by motor vehicle from Alberschwende and Dornbirn via Achrainstraße (L 49) . The populated parts of the hill are about 670  m above sea level. A. and 740  m above sea level A. The Rotten Henseln / Stauder are located to the southwest on Achrainstrasse to the municipal boundary to Dornbirn and to the northeast, towards the village center of Alberschwende, the hamlet of Schwarzen. The hamlet of Achrain is significant in terms of traffic history in connection with the important trade and traffic connection to the Bregenzerwald (see Achrainstraße).

The “Alberschwende Achrain” bus stop is located on Achrainstraße in the middle of the hamlet.

Waters

The Bühelinbach flows through Achrain (source of the community of Schwarzenberg ). The Maier Bach rises here in the so-called "Schollomoos" ( high moor ) and further to the southwest an unnamed brook. All three drain north-east into the Schwarzach .

Craft, trade

Despite the importance of the Achrain as a connection to the Bregenzerwald, no significant commercial infrastructure has developed in the hamlet of Achrain located here. Agriculture and traditional small-scale crafts still dominate here.

In the Schollomoos raised bog, peat used to be extracted .
