Acrostichon is a Dutch death metal band from Tilburg , which was founded in 1989, disbanded in 1998 and has been active again since 2009.

history

The band was founded in August 1989 and consisted of guitarists Jos van den Brand and Richard Schouten, singer and bassist Corinne van den Brand and drummer Vincent. Together they started with the first rehearsals, playing songs from Schouten's old band United Brains. Shortly afterwards they were already working on Acrostichon's first songs: Xenophobic Mania Immolation of the Agnostic and Elaborate Ritual . In November Roeland joined the line-up as the new drummer and the first appearances followed. In March 1990 the Demo Prologue was recorded. The demo allowed the group to increase its popularity, which made more and larger concerts possible. In June 1990, Serge Smolders, a new drummer, joined the band. Then the band performed together with Carcass , Hellbastard and Gorefest on the Christmas Carnage. In early 1991 the band went into the studio to record the demo Dehumanized , which includes the four new songs Dehumanized , Thriving on Chaos , Exasperation and Lost Remembrance . Over 1,000 copies of the demo have been sold. Songs from the demo are on the split release Where Is Your God Now…? by DSFA Records and on the EP Lost Remembrance from the US label Seraphic Decay Records . The demo attracted the interest of several labels, including Peaceville Records and Foundation 2000 . She also recorded the song Relics for the sampler Peaveville Volume 4 . Eventually the band signed a contract with the French label Modern Primitive Records . In March 1992, Acrostichon recorded her debut album Engraved in Black with producer Colin Richardson before it was released in early 1993. Richardson had taken on the producer role against the will of the band. In addition, the group has now performed together with bands such as Carcass, Napalm Death , Morbid Angel , Death , Master , Massacra , Sodom , Revenant , Asphyx , Hellbastard, Lemming Project , Atrocity , Cerebral Fix , Tiamat , Samael , Gorefest, Thanatos , Dead Head , Sinister , The Gathering and Pungent Stench . In 1994 Schouten left the band and was replaced by the guitarist Michel Meeuwissen. After a contract with Double Noise Records had been signed, the EP Forgotten was released in 1994 , which was followed shortly after by the second album Sentenced . Tjerk Maas joined the line-up as the new singer and bassist before the band split up in 1998. Jos van den Brand, Smolders, Meeuwissen and Maas then founded a new band called Outburst.

For Mario's Metal Mania, a festival organized by a friend of the members named Mario on October 4, 2009, Jos and Corinne van den Brand, Smolders and Schouten revived the band. The appearance should be followed by other occasional concerts. In 2013, Engraved in Black was re-released via Doomentia Records .

style

Robert Müller from Metal Hammer described the music on Engraved in Black as original Death Metal. He especially went into the fact that the vocals were written by a woman, whereas other metal singers like Sabina Classen would sound more like Madonna in comparison . The music "never sounds overly hectic, but prefers very heavy and neutrally evil", but the vocals sound "occasionally a bit artificial and not very sensitive to the moods created in the music".
