Jonathan Adair Turner, Baron Turner of Ecchinswell (born October 5, 1955 in Ipswich ) is a British business manager and university professor who has been a member of the House of Lords since 2005 . In addition, Lord Turner acts as Chairman of the Committee on Climate Change . Until March 31, 2013, he was Chairman of the UK Financial Services Authority .

Life

Studies and professional career

After schooling Turner began in 1974 Studied history and economics at Gonville and Caius College of the University of Cambridge , where he graduated 1978th He then worked as a part-time tutor and lecturer in economics at Gonville and Caius College and later also chaired the Overseas Development Institute . In addition to his teaching activities, he also worked in the private sector, initially at BP and then from 1979 to 1982 at Chase Manhattan Bank .

In 1982 he switched to the private sector and initially worked for the management consultancy McKinsey & Company until 1995 , for which he last set up branches in Eastern Europe and Russia between 1992 and 1995 . After leaving McKinsey & Company, he became General Secretary of the British Confederation of British Industry (CBI) in 1995 and held this position until 1999. From 2000 to 2006, he was Deputy Chairman of the Board of Merrill Lynch Europe, where he was also a senior consultant.

In addition to this, he was chairman of the Low Pay Commission from 2002 to 2006 and, from 2003 to 2006, chairman of the Pensions Commission , an independent government institution that advises the Minister of Labor and Pensions on issues relating to old-age provision and long-term savings.

The Institute for New Economic Thinking , founded in the wake of the financial crisis of 2008, is chaired by Turner. This think tank proposes new economic approaches.

Because of his many years of service, he was raised to the nobility by a letters patent dated September 7, 2005 as a life peer with the title Baron Turner of Ecchinswell , of Ecchinswell in the County of Hampshire . On 12 October 2005, his introduction (carried Introduction ) as a member of the House of Lords . In the upper house he belongs to the group of non-party peers, the so-called crossbenchers .

After leaving Merrill Lynch Europe, Lord Turner became Director of Standard Chartered Bank in 2006 and worked there until September 2008.
