Adalbert II of Saarbrücken

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Adalbert II of Saarbrücken († July 17, 1141 in Erfurt ) from the family of the Saargaugrafen was Archbishop of Mainz from 1138 to 1141.

He was the nephew of Adalbert I of Saarbrücken , his predecessor in the Archbishopric of Mainz. His father was Count Friedrich von Saarbrücken .

Adalbert II was trained in Mainz , Hildesheim , Paris , Reims and Montpellier . His family ties to Archbishop Adalbert I favored his career, so that he held several provosts in Mainz ( St. Peter and St. Stephan Abbey ) and Erfurt (Marienstift) at an early age .

During the vacancy of the Mainz bishopric, the Staufer Konrad of Swabia was lifted to the German royal throne. The Hohenstaufen wanted to occupy the Mainz bishop's chair with one of their partisans. Adalbert II, who was elected in 1138, was more of a strengthening for the opposition camp of the Saxons and Welfs , as he saw his territorial claims in Erfurt and Thuringia endangered by the Staufer .

The archbishop was unable to set significant accents, however, as he died in Erfurt after three years as archbishop in 1141. His body was transferred to Mainz.
