Adam Christian Thebesius (born January 12, 1686 , in Tschistey near Guhrau , Duchy of Glogau ; † November 10, 1732 in Hirschberg , Duchy of Schweidnitz ) was a German doctor and anatomist .

Life

Thebesius comes from a Liegnitz family of humanists and doctors and was born in 1686 in Tschistey in Lower Silesia . From 1695 to 1704 he went to school in Liegnitz and at the Elisabethanum in Breslau. He then studied medicine at the universities of Jena , Leipzig , Halle (from 1706) and Leiden , where he received his doctorate in medicine in 1708. He then married into a rich Hirschberg merchant family and from 1709 he practiced in Hirschberg. From 1715 he was city ​​physician in Hirschberg and medical advisor in Bad Warmbrunn .

Thebesius became known for his research on the coronary artery circulation . He summarized these in his dissertation "De circulo sanguinis in corde" ( On the circulation of the blood in the heart ). In it he described that the coronary veins lead directly into the heart chambers. These venae cordis minimae are also referred to as "Thebesius veins" and the drainage path as the "Thebesian system". The foramina venarum minimarum are also known as the "Thebesian foramina" (or after Raymond Vieussens Vieussens foramina ), and the valve of the coronary sinus as the "Thebesian valve". In 1713 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

Thebesius is the great-grandson of the theologian Adam Thebesius and father of the doctor Johann Ehrenfried Thebesius .
