Adelog of Hildesheim
Adelog von Dorstadt (* in the 12th century ; † September 20, 1190 in Hildesheim ) was Bishop of Hildesheim from 1171 to 1190.
Life
He came from the Saxon nobility and was a son of the noble free von Reinstedt. Since 1160 he has been a canon in Hildesheim and provost of the cathedral monastery in Goslar . In 1169 he became canon of the monastery on the Petersberg near Goslar. He stood in the Staufer-Welf conflict between Friedrich Barbarossa and the Saxon Duke Heinrich the Lion on the emperor's side. The fall of Heinrich made it easier for Adelog to attempt to shake off the ducal power over the Hildesheim district. So he was able to assert the sovereignty over the rule of Homburg . In 1185 he acquired the Asselburg with the help of the Hildesheim citizens .
On March 28, 1179, he created the basis of the relationship between the bishop and the cathedral chapter in the "Great Privilege". Adelog promoted Romanesque architecture in Saxony and took an active part in the reconstruction of the Michaeliskirche after the fire of 1186 and the completion of the Godehardikirche in Hildesheim as well as in the construction of the Neuwerk monastery in Goslar.
Despite the political differences with the Guelphs, Adelog was also active as a diocesan bishop in their residence city of Braunschweig . He promoted the construction of the Blaise Domes and consecrated on September 8, 1188 in the presence of Henry the Lion the Lady altar , remains one of the most important pieces of equipment of the dome.
In 1189 he confirmed and privileged the establishment of the Dorstadt monastery at the ancestral home of his family.
He was buried in Hildesheim Cathedral .
Tomb
Adelogs grave in the nave of the cathedral was an ornate sandstone - Epitaph closed. The grave and grave slab were later covered with floors and only exposed again in 1869. The epitaph was placed on the north wall of the cathedral cloister, where it is still located today.
The tomb shows the figure of the bishop in life size (1.87 m) as a high relief . An arch of four leaf clover arches over his head . He is dressed in episcopal regalia . In his right hand he holds the crook , the crook and base of which have broken off. The face shows a friendly, almost smiling expression.
The rich and metrically shaped Latin inscription on the stone is remarkable .
- The date of death, name and official dignity of the buried person are given in the arch above the head.
- In the flat corner fields above there are two hexameters in six vertical lines :
HIC SITUS EST PRESUL ADELOGUS VIR PIETATIS
Bishop Adelog, a man of piety,
MIRE DULCIS HOMO , is buried here. DEUS ILLUM JUNGE BEATIS
a wonderfully lovable person. God, join him with the blessed! - The margins bear the distich :
HIC ASLE REDITUS EMIT. PECCATA FATEN (TI)
This acquired (for the diocese) the income of those from Assel . To him who confesses his sins,
DA VENIAM FRATER ET MISERERE DEUS,
grant forgiveness, brother, and have mercy, God. - On the cover of the book, which the sitter holds out to the viewer with his left hand, there is a riddle, which metrically forms a hexameter with pentameter , but only reveals its meaning by rearranging it:
GLORIA TRANSIT
FORMA MARCET
GEDUS ABIT HEC
MUNDA MODO
NA PRO CLAMO
BABILIS TACENS OLD
. ORA P. ME
Dissolved:
GLORIA MUNDANA TRANSIT
Earthly glory passes.
FORMA PROBABILIS MARCET
Pleasant form disappears.
GENUS ALTUM ABIT
High descent is passing.
HAEC MODO CLAMO TACENS
I now exclaim this in silence.
ORA PRO ME
Please for me.
