Adolf August Friedrich Rudorff (born March 21, 1803 in Mehringen near Hoya ; † February 14, 1873 in Berlin ) was a German lawyer , representative of the "antiquarian" wing of Savigny's students .

Life

Adolf Friedrich Rudorff was the son of Friedrich August Rudorff (* 1768; † 1835) from Zeven and of Christina Elisabeth Heldberg (* 1778; † 1843) from Bremen. From 1820 to 1823 he studied law at the Georg August University of Göttingen under Georg Julius Ribbentrop and Karl Friedrich Eichhorn . From 1825 he studied at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin with Friedrich Carl von Savigny . Under him he completed his habilitation in 1825, in 1829 he was appointed associate professor and in 1833 he was appointed full professor. In 1852 he was appointed Privy Councilor of Justice, from 1860 on he was a member of the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences and in 1857/58 he was elected rector of the Friedrich Wilhelms University. In his speech of October 15, 1857, he spoke of "the calling of royalty to convey the unity of all members of society". In the last years of his life he was so ill that Heinrich Dernburg had to be appointed as his successor. Rudorff died on February 14, 1873 in Berlin.

Adolf Friedrich Rudorff was married to Elisabeth (called Betty) Pistor (* 1808; † 1887). His son was the composer Ernst Rudorff .

Services

His book The Right of Guardianship, developed from the common rights applicable in Germany, is heavily influenced by Savigny's writing Profession Our Time for Legislation and Jurisprudence . Rudorff then turned to Roman legal history and contemporary philology and dealt with ancient writers and scripts. His Roman legal history for academic use was valued for its accuracy until 1880, despite the objections of Rudolf von Jhering because of its confusing system. His processing of the writings of the Roman Agrimensors still occupies research today.

Rudorff achieved particular merit by editing some of the writings of Georg Friedrich Puchta from his estate and by his edition by Friedrich Carl von Savigny: The Right of Possession (1865).

From 1842 he was co-editor of the journal for historical jurisprudence .

In 1861 he and others founded the Zeitschrift für Rechtsgeschichte (then a journal of the Savigny Foundation for legal history , finally a journal for historical jurisprudence ).
