Adolf Karl Friedrich Nickol , actually Nickel (born March 10, 1824 in Schöppenstedt , † May 21, 1905 in Braunschweig ) was a German painter who is particularly known for his landscapes and animal pictures .

life and work

Nickol was born in a small village east of Braunschweig as the seventh son of the Schönfärber master Heinrich Anton Karl Julius Nickol (1778-1854) and his wife Johanna Magdalena Luise (née Niemeier, 1781-1848). His parents recognized his talent early on and trained him in painting . At the age of 14 he enrolled at the Brunswick Collegium Carolinum , where he was a student of Heinrich Brandes , among other things . Due to above-average performance, Nickol attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 1846 (without being enrolled there) and also undertook a longer study trip through the Netherlands, Belgium and France. Together with Friedrich Wilhelm Pfeiffer , he also became a member of the Braunschweig Art Club, which had existed since 1836. In 1851 he returned to Braunschweig to settle down as a painter. Another trip took him to Italy in 1853/54, where he stayed in Rome and the surrounding area. In 1856 Brandes proposed his pupil to the Carolinum as his deputy. After Brandes 'death in 1868, Nickol was appointed Brandes' successor in freehand, ornament, figure and landscape drawing on the recommendation of the rector and mathematics professor Julius Dedekind . In 1870 Nickol was appointed professor.

After receiving several awards for his work from the Brunswick Duke Wilhelm , Nickol was appointed Privy Councilor in 1899 . In 1903 the Commander's Cross of the Order of Henry the Lion followed . In 1904 Nickol was finally retired . His students included: Otto Keitel , Arnold Kramer , Hans Pahlmann , Wilhelm Pahlmann , Constantin Uhde and Rudolf Wilke .
