Adolf von Berlichingen
Carl Friedrich Götz Gustav Adolf Freiherr von Berlichingen , pseudonym : Klemens Adolf (born May 30, 1840 in Stuttgart , † May 3, 1915 in Bad Kissingen , Lower Franconia ) was a German Catholic theologian, Jesuit , writer, poet and doctor.
Life
He was the son of the Württemberg Chamberlain Friedrich Reinhard von Berlichingen (1798–1865) and his wife Albertine nee. Eschenburg (1817–1883), from Hamburg. The father converted to Catholicism on his deathbed, the mother had adopted the Catholic faith as early as 1850. In 1858, at the age of 18, Adolf von Berlichingen converted to Catholicism with two siblings .
From 1858 to 1861 he studied the Jesuit pedagogy Stella Matutina in Feldkirch ( Vorarlberg ) and became a Jesuit in 1862. Eveline von Massenbach, lady-in-waiting to Queen Olga of Württemberg, also notes his entry into the Jesuit novitiate in her memoirs, so that he should not have been a stranger at court. During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/1871 he served as a nurse. In 1873 Berlichingen was ordained a priest and worked in England, Holland and Austria as a preacher, apologist and writer.
In 1885 Berlichingen left the order and worked in Austria and Bavaria as a pastoral priest, doctor for the poor, writer and poet. For a long time he lived at Glanegg Castle near Salzburg , but also in Vienna and most recently in Würzburg , where in 1902 he gave several lectures against Luther and Protestantism.
Baron von Berlichingen was friends with the Jewish art historian Adolph Goldschmidt (1863-1944), whom he had met during a stay at a spa. He was also friends with the composer Armin Knab (1881–1951) and he encouraged his musical work.
His biography about the Ecuadorian President Gabriel García Moreno , published in 1884, was reprinted in 2007.
Adolf von Berlichingen's sister Mathilde - also a convert - joined the Sacré-Cœur sisters as a nun in Kintzheim, Alsace .
