Adolph Blankenhorn
Adolph Blankenhorn (born June 6, 1843 in Müllheim (Baden) , † January 7, 1906 in Konstanz ) was a German oenologist .
Family and origin
He comes from a family of winery owners in Müllheim. His parents were the winemaker Adolf Friedrich Blankenhorn-Löffler (1812–73) and Katharina Judith, née. Krafft (daughter of Isaak Krafft and Anna Katharina Löffler). His father founded the winery in 1842–44 together with his brothers Nikolaus Blankenhorn-Krafft (1810–1860; ∞ Maria Krafft) and Jakob Wilhelm Blankenhorn. His grandfather, Nikolaus Friedrich Blankenhorn (1784-1840) was a landowner, mayor of Müllheim and a member of the first Baden state parliament.
His son Erich Blankenhorn was chief of the Baden police from 1919 to 1933. His grandson Herbert Blankenhorn was a diplomat and an important collaborator of Konrad Adenauer .
Life
Adolph Blankenhorn studied natural sciences at the Technical University of Karlsruhe and at the Ruprecht-Karls-University of Heidelberg with Robert Wilhelm Bunsen , where he received his doctorate in August 1864. In 1866 he was in the university laboratory in Freiburg and in 1867 he acquired practice on the family-owned wineries in Müllheim and Ihringen ( Blankenhornsberg ). In the same year he became an employee of Leonhard Roesler (1839-1910) at the Technical University in Karlsruhe. Between 1868 and 1875 Blankenhorn built Germany's first oenological institute in Karlsruhe from his private fortune. In 1870 he completed his habilitation as a private lecturer for viticulture with the text "History and management of the Blankenhornsberg vineyard near Ihringen". In the institute he carried out intensive experiments on the biology of phylloxera and their direct and indirect control with resistant American vines and hybrids. Between 1872 and 1881 he was in close contact with Friedrich Hecker in the USA .
In 1874 he became president of the newly founded German Winegrowing Association and carried out this task until 1893. In this function, Blankenhorn founded the specialist journal Der Weinbau , which was published by the Viticulture Association from 1875 to 1883. Already in 1869 he had published the journal Annalen der Oenologie together with Leonhard Roesler , which was also discontinued in 1883.
