Adri van Es

Adrianus "Adri" van Es (born April 28, 1913 in Amersfoort , Province of Utrecht ; † January 6, 1994 in Wassenaar , Province of South Holland ) was a Dutch Vice Admiral of the Royal Navy and a politician of the Anti-Revolutionaire Partij (ARP), who among other things was State Secretary in various governments for several years .

Life

Officer of the Royal Navy

Van Es completed after attending the Eerste Openbare Lagere School and the Higher Citizens School in Amersfoort between September 3, 1930 and September 5, 1933, training as an officer at the Royal Naval Institute ( Koninklijk Instituut voor de Marine ) in Den Helder .

He then became a naval officer of the Koninklijke Navy and was first on September 5, 1933 lieutenant third class and on September 5, 1935 lieutenant second class. After his promotion to lieutenant in the sea, first class, he became the commander of the coastal gun battery on the island of Vlieland in 1940 and after his capture was a German prisoner of war between 1942 and 1945 .

After the end of World War II, he remained in the Navy and was 1947-1956 Commander of the Royal Australian Navy acquired Corvette Hr. Ms. Boeroe , which was used as a minesweeper in the Dutch East Indies . After his return to the Netherlands, he was briefly in 1956 head of the armament department of the material department in the Ministry of the Navy ( Ministerie van Marine ), and then between 1956 and 1957 commander of the destroyer Mr. Ms. Friesland .

In 1957 he became head of the operations department in the main department of the naval staff in the naval ministry, which became part of the ministry of defense ( Ministerie van Defensie ) in 1959 , and held this position until 1960. During this time, van Es was promoted to sea captain in 1959 , entrusted with the organization of the defense of Dutch New Guinea . At the same time, he was a member of the board of the state company Staatsbedrijf Artillerie-Inrichtingen, which is responsible for artillery equipment .

He then acted between 1961 and 1962 as the commander of the 5th  Marine Squadron , which was stationed in Dutch New Guinea, among other places, when Indonesia tried to forcibly incorporate the area into its national territory by landing troops on December 18, 1961. In 1962 he was part of the Dutch delegation in the negotiations with the United Nations and Indonesia on the future of Dutch New Guinea.

After being promoted to Rear Admiral ( Schout-bij-Nacht ), van Es temporarily took over the role of flag officer for material between December 10, 1962 and August 14, 1963 .

State Secretary in the Ministry of Defense

On August 14, 1963 van was there, in 1959 joined as a member of the Anti-Revolutionary Party (ARP) of Prime Minister Victor Marijnen of State for Affairs of the Royal Navy in the Ministry of Defense in the cabinet appointed and held that post in the subsequent governments Cals , Zijlstra and De Jong until July 6, 1971. In 1967 he was promoted to Vice Admiral.

In the subsequent government formed by Prime Minister Barend Biesheuvel , he remained State Secretary in the Ministry of Defense from July 14, 1971 to September 16, 1972, where he was now responsible for personnel and materials policy.

On January 1, 1975 van Es took over the chairmanship of KWF Kankerbestrijding , a foundation named after Queen Wilhelmina for the promotion of cancer treatment. He also became a member of the Advisory Board for Defense Affairs in 1975.

For his many years of service in the navy and politics, van Es was awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of Orange-Nassau and was appointed Commander of the Order of the Dutch Lions on October 20, 1972 .
