This was followed by a humanities degree at La Sapienza University in Rome, which he graduated with a Laureate in 1962 . From 1964 he worked for the Soprintendenza of Abruzzo , from 1971 in a managerial position for the Soprintendenza of the Molise region , interrupted in 1968/69 by a postdoctoral study of ancient history with Ronald Syme at the University of Oxford .

From 1969 to 1974 La Regina worked as a lecturer (professore incaricato) at the University of Perugia , but received the license to teach the topography of ancient Italy as early as 1971 with the libera docenza . After the restructuring of the Italian Ministry of Cultural Property and Tourism in 1975, he became head of the Soprintendenza of Ancient Rome in 1976, a position he held until 2004.

After successfully applying, La Regina was offered the Chair of Etruscology and Italic Antiquity at the University of Padua in 1986 . In 2002 he moved to the corresponding chair at Molise University , and finally to La Sapienza University in 2004. In the same year he took over the presidency of the Istituto Nazionale di Archeologia e Storia dell'Arte . He was also elected President of the Associazione Internazionale di Archeologia Classica in 2009, of which he is still a member of the Board of Directors.

Adriano La Regina is a recognized expert on early Italian history, especially the Etruscans and Samnites . In addition, he deals with topics of classical archeology and questions of museum didactics. His rigorous administration as soprintendent in Rome, which saw the protection of the Roman antiquities subordinate to him in the first place, earned him the nickname "signor no", because he braced himself against numerous projects that in his eyes endangered the antiquities.

Adriano La Regina has received numerous awards for his work. In 2000, he received the Umberto Zanotti Bianco Prize from the monument and environmental protection organization Italia Nostra for the restoration work he initiated . In the following year he received the Rotondi Award for his outstanding efforts in the preservation of art and cultural monuments .
