action

Richard “Rickey” Mayberry is a busy newspaper reporter who travels the world. Although he is married, this does not prevent him from flirting with attractive women. His newest companion is his colleague Irene Malcolm and he tells her the same story that he tells everyone else in order not to have to talk about marriage: Although he lives separated from his wife Sue, she does not want to consent to a divorce. However, when he receives a telegram in which his wife informs him that, contrary to expectations, she actually wants to divorce him, he immediately rushes to his home in New York to win her back. Meanwhile, Sue plans to marry the handsome Owen Wright after her divorce. This in turn is confused that Sue still seems to be interested in her husband.

With the help of the clever Irene, Rickey tries to make Sue jealous. Irene, however, was urged by her boss and Rickey's boss, Mr. Phillips, to see that Rickey finally put an end to his marriage so that he could concentrate fully on his work as a reporter again. After Irene has done a great job, however, she realizes that Rickey and Sue belong together, and she no longer wants to stand in their way. After several misunderstandings, the couple find their way back together when Rickey pretends to have had a traffic accident and is injured in the hospital. Sue sees through his show, but forgives him one more time, because he did it out of love for her.

Reviews

The critics were not very pleased with the script and the direction of the film. For the lexicon of international film , Der Herzensbrecher was a "[l] light-weight comedy with a few grotesque features" that was also "not particularly inspired by the popular Hollywood recipe". Bosley Crowther of the New York Times found that it would be “more than unfair” to “blame the cast for the cheapness of the film”, which was actually due to “the lousy script and slow direction of Lloyd Bacon”. "When trying to make the film light-hearted and fun", director Lloyd Bacon landed "in a world full of boredom", was also the opinion of Weekly Variety . Rita Hayworth is a reporter who falls in love with Morgan, "by far the best of the cast."

According to Hal Erickson of the All Movie Guide , The Heartbreaker offers "the spectacle of how the glamorous Merle Oberon and the stunning Rita Hayworth scramble for the best camera positions and, in a sense, push the male actors, Dennis Morgan and Ralph Bellamy, almost off the screen!" In addition, the supporting actors, Hattie McDaniel and Butterfly McQueen, are "of interest" two years after their work in Gone with the Wind .
