description

Vegetative characteristics

Agave manantlanicola is a perennial plant that forms up to ten runners. The trunk, which usually declines with age, is 50 to 90 centimeters long and 20 to 25 centimeters thick. The open leaf rosette reaches a height of up to 1 meter and a diameter of up to 1.8 meters with age. It consists of 50 to 60 green and 30 to 70 dry, bent-back leaves . Their elongated, linear, often sickle-shaped, runny leaf blade is 45 to 76 centimeters long, 6 to 13 centimeters wide and 5 centimeters thick at their base. The leaves are glaucous or yellowish green at the base and become reddish at the anthesis . The reddish brown, runny, downward sloping end spine is 3 to 4.5 centimeters long. The horny leaf margin is unbroken and razor sharp.

Inflorescences and flowers

The inflorescence is 3 to 5 meters high. The flower-bearing part begins after a third or more. The red to reddish brown inflorescence stalk has a diameter of 10 to 12 centimeters at its base. The bracts on the peduncle are bent back with age. Basal bracts are ovate-linear. They are 7.8 to 10.7 inches long including the spine and 1.6 to 3 inches wide at their base. The linear, reddish-brown thorn has a length of 2.2 to 2.5 centimeters and is 3 to 4.5 millimeters wide at its base. The reddish, egg-shaped, tail-long-pointed floral bracts are 4 to 5 centimeters long and 5 to 7 millimeters wide. The pairs of flowers are 39 to 48 millimeters long and stand on 1 to 2 millimeter long peduncles . The elongated, hood-shaped, inside yellow green tepals have a length of 15 to 22 mm and are 2.5 to 6.5 millimeters wide. The inner tepals have white edges and are usually 2 to 3 millimeters wider than the outer tepals. The flower tube is 2 to 6.5 millimeters long. There are six, occasionally seven stamens . The slightly eccentric stamens are attached to the base of the tepals and are 16 to 19 millimeters long. The cylindrical, striped, yellow-green ovary is 18 to 22 millimeters long and 5 to 8 millimeters wide. The stylus , 30 to 42 millimeters long and 1.7 to 2.1 millimeters wide, is cylindrical and hollow. The three-lobed scars are bearded at the top. Tepals, stamens, anthers and stylus have reddish tips.

The flowering period extends from June to August.

Fruits and seeds

The elongated, triangular, short-pointed capsule fruits are persistent and stand on stems 3 to 7 millimeters long and 4 to 5 millimeters wide. They have a length of 24 to 34 millimeters (rarely from 20 millimeters) and are 16 to 18 millimeters (rarely from 13 millimeters) wide. The fruits contain semicircular, occasionally elliptical, slightly winged, bright black seeds 5 to 6 millimeters long and 3.3 to 4 millimeters wide.

The fruits are ripe from August to October.

Systematics and distribution

Agave manantlanicola is found in the Mexican state of Jalisco in the Sierra de Manantlán biosphere reserve at altitudes of 2640 to 2865 meters. It grows on almost vertical volcanic rock cliffs and occasionally on cliff tops in an area where the fog is constantly moving during the day during the rainy season from May to October .

Agave manantlanicola is among others with Pinus durangensis , Pinus devoniana , Stevia lucida , Arbutus xalapensis , Arbutus occidentalis , Comarostaphylis discolor subsp. manantlanensis , Muhlenbergia dumosa , Muhlenbergia macroura , Echeveria species, Govenia purpusii , Quercus laurina , Quercus crassifolia , Satureja macrostema var. laevigata , Castilleja albobarbata , Salix paradoxa , Heuchera longipetala , Abies religiosa and Agave inaequidens associated.

The first description by Ramón Cuevas Guzmán and Francisco J. Santana-Michel was published in 2012. The species belongs to the subgenus Littaea and is assigned to the Amolae group there. It is close to Agave attenuata subsp. attenuata , Agave attenuata subsp. dentata , Agave bakeri and Agave vazquezgarciae from the Amolae group and Agave chazaroi from the Marginatae group.

Danger

Agave manantlanicola meets the criteria for the endangered Red List species the IUCN as " Endangered (EN) " d. H. at great risk of being classified.
