Agnetendorfer snow pit

The Agnetendorfer Schneegrube (also Black Snow Pit, Polish Czarny Kocioł Jagniątkowski ) is a glacial cirque on the Polish side of the Giant Mountains about five kilometers south of Agnetendorf ( Jagniątków ).

location

The pit lies between the northwest slope of the Hraniční hřeben ( border ridge ) and the northeast slope of the Great Balaclava (Polish Śmielec , Czech Smělec ) below the Agnetendorfer Pass (also Black Pass, Polish Czarna Przełęcz ) ( 1350  m ).

The upper edge of the basin reaches a height of 1325  m npm , the carousel floor is at an altitude of 1130 to 1150 meters above sea level. Down the valley it is crossed by terminal moraines and bordered by lateral moraines.

The descent into the basin would be possible from the pass, but is forbidden due to the strict nature protection regulations (the designated paths must not be left). The best way to get to the cirque from Agnetendorf is via the Korallensteinweg and the Prof. Nafe Weg, named after a former chairman of the Riesengebirgsverein.

Surname

While there are light remains of snow in the large and small snow pits well into summer, the Agnetendorfer pit appears darker, as the snow melts earlier here and the vegetation has also made greater progress. Therefore it got the name affix "black" snow pit.

Hydrology

The Agnetendorf snow pit drains via the snow pit water ( Wrzosówka ), a mountain stream , the course of which is partly covered by rock debris and is then not visible. At the northern end of the gorge, at an altitude of approx. 655  m , the stream falls over the so-called tower fall ( Wodospad Wrzosówki ) into the valley, then flows through Agnetendorf ( Jagniątków ) and Hermsdorf under the Kynast ( Sobieszów ) and flows after 14.5 km near Bad Warmbrunn ( Cieplice Śląskie-Zdrój ) in the Zacken ( Kamienna ) .

Emergence

The basin was created by an Ice Age glacier and was formed during the Pleistocene , probably during the last glacial period . Compared to the karen of the snow pits ( Śnieżne Kotły ) it is less pronounced on the High Wheel , its cirque walls do not rise so high at just 160 meters. The area is more determined by the elongated, wide gorge that the snow pit water cut into the Mädelkamm, which earned it the historical name “Tiefer Graben”.

Flora, fauna and nature conservation

Its rare vegetation makes the Black Snow Pit from a botanical point of view one of the most interesting areas of the Giant Mountains. In the moss layer there are various peat mosses such as B. the grove peat moss (Sphagnum capillifolium) or the deceptive peat moss (Sphagnum fallax). In the herb layer, bristle grass and narrow-leaved cotton grass (Eriophorum angustifolium) dominate. The subalpine perennial communities are formed by gray alpine easter and alpine milk lettuce on the one hand and fern plants with alpine forest fern (Athyrium distentifolium) on the other.

On the marshy ground in the flat northern part of the Kars, mountain heather (Arnico-Callunetum) thrives, a unique plant community which, in addition to the main plant Arnica montana, is primarily composed of various types of grass and sedges .

The animals here are foxes and badgers , roe deer and red deer , weasels , stone marten and pine marten . Among birds, black grouse , dipper and red star bluethroat should be mentioned. A special feature are mouflons , which were settled at the beginning of the 20th century by the forest administration at the time for Count Schaffgotsch, who was enthusiastic about hunting .

The Agnetendorfer Schneegrube was designated as a nature reserve as early as 1933 and is one of the oldest protected areas in the Sudetes, which was established to protect rare flora and fauna. Today it is part of the Polish National Park Karkonoski Park Narodowy (KPN).
