Alan E. Nourse

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alan Edward Nourse (* 11. August 1928 in Des Moines , Iowa ; † 19th July 1992 in Thorp , Washington ) was an American science fiction - author and physician .

Life

Alan Nourse graduated from High School in Long Island, New York. He served in the US Navy during World War II . After the war, Nourse studied medicine and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Rutgers University , New Brunswick , New Jersey in 1951 . On the side he had started writing novels. On June 11, 1952, he married Ann Morton in Lynden , New Jersey. In 1955 he received his doctorate in medicine (MD) from the University of Pennsylvania and then worked for a year at the Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle, Washington state. From 1958 to 1963 he practiced as a doctor in North Bend , Washington . His medical studies helped him with his science fiction subjects. Nourse was friends with the authors Avram Davidson and Robert A. Heinlein , who dedicated one of his books to him in 1964 ( Farnham's Freehold ).

subjects

Nourse published his first SF story High Threshold in 1951 in Astounding magazine . He wrote science fiction and non-fiction works on medicine and science for both young people and adults. While his early works deal mainly with the theme of a conflict between the earth and its colonies in space, his later works focus more on medicine, epidemics and the role of technology in the development of mankind.

Some confusion arose among science fiction readers who knew that Andre Norton was using the writer name "Andrew North" around the same time. They mistakenly assumed that "Alan Nourse" was another Norton writer's name. Nourse's novel The Bladerunner just gave the famous film its name and has nothing to do with the plot.
