Alaplı (in ancient times Keles or Cales ) is a city and capital of the district of the same name in the Turkish province of Zonguldak in the Black Sea region . Here the Alaplı river flows into the Black Sea . Alaplı is located about 59 kilometers by road (as the crow flies: 45 km) southwest of the provincial capital Zonguldak and was raised to the rank of Belediye (municipality) in 1966 .

The county is the westernmost in the province. It borders on Düzce Province to the south , Ereğli County to the north and Devrek County to the east .

The district was created in 1987 from the western part of the Ereğli District and had been a Bucak there (since 1927) . At the last census before the change of area, 37,054 inhabitants lived in the 42 villages of Bucak Alaplı , i. H. 20.41% of the then district population.

At the end of 2018, the district consisted of another Belediye in addition to the district town with Gümeli . In addition, 52 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 441 residents belonged to the district . At that time, three villages had over a thousand inhabitants: Kılçak (1,370), Aşağıdağ (1,293) and Çatak (1,114 pop .). 19 villages had more than the average population (= 441), the smallest village ( Kocaman ) was also the smallest village in the entire province (79 inhabitants).

At the end of 2018, the district had the second lowest population density in the province (115.6 inh. Per km²) and an urban population of 48.26 percent.
