Gökçebey ( Tefen until 1963 ) is a town and capital of the district of the same name in the Turkish province of Zonguldak in the western Black Sea region . The city is 43 kilometers by road (33 km as the crow flies) southeast of the provincial capital on the Devrek Çayı River . Both cities are connected by the D750 trunk road. In 1972 Gökçebey was made a Belediye (municipality).

The district is located in the east of the province and borders on Çaycuma district in the north, the central district ( Merkez ) of the provincial capital Zonguldak and Devrek district in the west, and Bartın province in the east and Karabük province in the south .

The county was formed in 1990 (Law No. 3644) from the northeastern part of Devrek County. As Bucak Gökçebey he existed until then in the district and had 20,774 inhabitants in the last census before the change of area (1985). That was 19.94% of the population of what was then Devrek County (104,186 inhabitants).

At the end of 2018, the district (the second smallest in the province ) consisted of another Belediye (municipality) in addition to the district town (37.9% of the district's population) with Bakacakkadı (3,275 inhabitants ). In addition, 19 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 536 residents belonged to the district. The scale of the population ranged from 986 ( Örmeci ) down to 207. Nine villages had more inhabitants than the average.

At the end of 2018, the district had a population density of 118.3 inh. Per km², which was lower than the provincial value. The urban population was 53.01 percent. Of all eight counties in Zonguldak Province, the county had the fewest inhabitants (3.6% of the provincial population).
