The tunnels served the residents as air raid protection tunnels during the Second World War . Of all the villages in the Brixen area, Albeins was hit hardest by bombing, especially towards the end of the war, mainly because of the nearby railway bridge. In a study in the Albeins area in 1988, 164 species of spiders from 23 families were collected using barber traps . Nine species among the harvestmen.
