Albert Christiaan Kruyt (born October 10, 1869 in Surabaya , † January 19, 1949 in The Hague ), also known as Kruijt , was a Dutch missionary and ethnographer who worked in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia ).

Albert Christiaan Kruyt was born into a missionary family in 1869. When he was seven years old, his parents sent him to the Netherlands to attend school there.

Activity as a missionary

The Dutch Mission Society ( Nederlandsch Zendeling Genootschap ) sent Kruyt as a missionary to the Malay Archipelago , namely to Central Celebes ( Central Sulawesi ), where he worked with Nicolaas Adriani. In 1892 Albert Kruyt and Nicolaas Adriani built a mission station at the mouth of the Poso in the Poso settlement of the same name on behalf of the Rotterdam Mission . There he developed into an important ethnographer. The reason for this was the peculiarity of the mission in the mountains of Sulawesi, which started later than the missions on Java , the Moluccas and parts of Sumatra . The mission to Sulawesi did not focus on the "quick baptisms" possible. Kruyt waited 17 years before he decided it was time to baptize the first large group of local people. The missionaries on Sulawesi wanted to gradually build a local church. This required the missionaries to slowly settle in to the local cultures. So some of them became ethnologists and linguists . "Kruyt is the prototype of the ethnographically interested missionary to whom ethnology owes so much."

In 1932 Kruyt returned to the Netherlands.

Importance as an ethnographer

Kruyt wrote numerous treatises on the ethnology of the country. In 1906 his fundamental study Het animisme in the Indian archipelago appeared . The Cambridge ethnologist James George Frazer regarded Kruyt as “the highest living authority” for the theory of animism . In the footsteps of researchers such as Paul and Fritz Sarasin , Walter Kaudern (1881–1942), and Albert Grubauer (1869–1960), Kruyt developed his second major work on the so-called West Toraja on Central Celebes . Kruyt published frequently in the Tijdschrift voor Indische Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde , in the Bijdragen tot de Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde van Nederlandsch-Indië of the Dutch Colonial Institute and in the Mededeelingen (messages) of his mission society .
