Albert Sirk (born May 25, 1887 or May 26, 1887 in Santa Croce , Free City of Trieste , Austria-Hungary , † September 13, 1947 in Celje , Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia ) was an Austro-Yugoslav painter , graphic artist and illustrator . In the Slovenian context, it gained importance primarily through marine painting .

Life

After attending secondary school in Trieste, Sirk learned decorative drawing from 1906 to 1907 at the trade school there and then worked as a draftsman in a lithographic institute. Between 1909 and 1912 he did his military service in the Austro-Hungarian Navy . After retiring from military service, he attended courses at the art academies in Venice ( Accademia di belle arti di Venezia ) and Urbino ( Accademia di belle arti di Urbino ) until 1913 . Subsequently, he passed the teaching qualification test as a drawing teacher for elementary and lower technical schools and was appointed to Pula as a marine draftsman that same year . Here he gave drawing lessons to Admiral Miklós Horthy's children, among others . After the First World War, he was employed as a contract teacher at the grammar school in Trieste, Italy, where Sirk was dismissed in 1923 as an “undesirable Slovenian”.

During his teaching activities, he began working as an illustrator for Slovenian newspapers, including Naš glas ( Eng . Our Voice ), Novi rod and Novice . In 1929 Sirk finally moved to Yugoslavia, where he worked as a specialist teacher in Lenart v Slovenskih Goricah and Celje , but at the same time continued to provide illustrations for newspapers (including for Ilustracija and others). From 1931 he took part in several exhibitions. After he was resettled to Serbia during the Second World War , he taught at the teacher training college in Portorož after the war .

His painterly oeuvre includes seascapes, portraits and still lifes . He participated in all artistic trends. In addition to his main work, he also created a series of watercolored travel sketches, pen drawings, woodcuts and caricatures. During his travels he visited all regions of Yugoslavia, but also penetrated other areas. On September 13, 1947, Sirk died at the age of 60 in Celje, at that time already part of the Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia.
