Life

Albert Theer's parents were the gemstone cutter Joseph Theer and the embroiderer Thekla Theer . He had two older brothers, Adolf Theer and Robert Theer , who also worked as painters and lithographers. The family moved from Johannesberg in Silesia to Vienna in 1820 .

There Albert Theer attended the engraving and ore cutting school of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna from 1827 to 1832 . He was awarded the Gundel Prize in 1830 . He first took part in one of the academy's public exhibitions in 1834. Theer married Karoline von Perger, a sister of the painter Anton von Perger , in 1838 . The couple had several children, including Julius Theer, who also pursued a career as an academic painter but died of pulmonary tuberculosis at a young age . Albert Theer's last exhibition was one of the Austrian Art Association in 1855. He was active as an artist for a long time afterwards.

Albert Theer outlived his two brothers by decades. Until he died in 1902 at the age of 86, he was considered the last living representative of old Viennese miniature painting . He was buried in the Vienna Central Cemetery . Theergasse in Vienna- Meidling was probably named after him and his brother Robert in 1930. His final resting place has been an honorary grave since 1969, which the City of Vienna took care of .
