Eduard Heinrich Albert von Bamberg (born May 6, 1844 in Rudolstadt ; † January 24, 1910 in Gotha ) was a German classical philologist and grammar school director in Eberswalde (1878-1883) and Gotha (1883-1910).

origin

Albert von Bamberg was the son of the lawyer and secret government councilor Günther von Bamberg (* February 14, 1814 - January 17, 1868) and his wife Thekla Hörcher (* December 18, 1820 - August 7, 1857). After the death of his wife, he married her twin sister Louise (1820–1898) on October 11, 1859 .

Life

He attended the grammar school in his hometown Rudolstadt and then moved to the University of Göttingen to study theology and philology (with Ernst Curtius and Hermann Sauppe ). He later moved to Bonn , where Otto Jahn and especially Friedrich Ritschl influenced him. Ritschl also suggested his dissertation on two Aristophanes manuscripts in Ravenna and Venice, with which he received his doctorate in 1865 ( De Ravennate et Veneto Aristophanis codicibus , Leipzig 1865). Albert von Bamberg dedicated the writing to his father.

Subsequently, von Bamberg worked as a high school teacher in Berlin . In 1878 he went to Eberswalde , where he was appointed director of the newly founded municipal high school. He organized the school and, after five years there, brought the first students to high school. In 1883 he switched to the Gotha Gymnasium Ernestinum as headmaster , where he taught and researched until his death. In Gotha he promoted the Evangelical Union and the amalgamation of the German Protestant regional churches. He was also chairman of the main association of the German-Evangelical Federation for the Duchy of Gotha and since 1899 a member of the Academy of Non-Profit Science in Erfurt . In 1902 he was appointed a secret high school councilor for his services and was honored with a commemorative publication in 1905.

On January 24, 1910 Albert von Bamberg died unexpectedly as a result of a stroke. He was buried on January 28th in the main cemetery in Gotha . The high school graduation ceremony on March 23 was held in his memory. His estate is in the Gotha Research Library .

In addition to the preoccupation with the textual criticism of Aristophanes, von Bamberg also dealt with the Homeric theory of forms, the Greek theory of word formation and syntax as well as the Platonic dialogues Apology , Crito , Laches and Euthyphron .
