Alegrete (officially Portuguese Município de Alegrete , German the happy ) is a city in Brazil in the state of Rio Grande do Sul and is considered the center of the Gaúcho culture. With half a million cattle and almost as many sheep, it is one of the main places where milk and wool are produced. It is home to the poet Mario Quintana .
It is located on the Rio Ibirapuitã river at 102 meters above sea level. The distance to the capital Porto Alegre is 506 km. As of July 1, 2019, the population was estimated at 73,589 inhabitants, who are called Alegretenses ( alegretenses ) and live on a large community area of around 7800 km², about three times the size of the Saarland, but arithmetically only around 10 inhabitants per km².
The ecoregion and biome are predominantly that of the pampas .
