Alexander Erbrich-Crawford (born 1965 in Mainz ) is a German trombonist and arranger from Karlsruhe .

Life

He owes the start of his musical career to the chamber musician Hans Gerards, who works at the Mainz State Theater . As the leader of the wind group of St. Stephan , he became aware of the young Alexander, because he often ran whistling through the alleys of the old town near St. Stephen's Church. Finally, he offered the child to learn to play a brass instrument. Encouraged by the musician, the then nine-year-old began to take trombone lessons at the youth music school. He soon played in various orchestras and bands , including at his school, the Bischöfliche Willigis-Gymnasium . At the age of eleven he left the music school to change to the Peter Cornelius Conservatory in Mainz .

After graduating from high school in 1984, he joined Army Music Corps 8 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen . In 1985 he passed the entrance exam at the Munich Music Academy . He financed his studies there, which he finished after four years, by playing in dance orchestras, among other things.

He immediately found a job as a trombonist at the Opera in the Stuttgart State Orchestra . There he made the acquaintance of Enrique Crespo , one of the initiators of the brass ensemble German Brass , founded in 1974 , who was a solo trombonist at the RSO Stuttgart . Through the intermediary of Crespos, he occasionally helped out when other members of the ten-member ensemble were absent. He benefited from the fact that, in addition to the trombone, he also plays trumpet and alphorn and feels at home in many musical genres. In addition to the classical repertoire , he is also interested in Latin , jazz , folk and world music . Erbrich-Crawford has been a permanent member of German Brass since the turn of the millennium and now arranges the pieces of music for the combo alongside his colleague Matthias Höfs .
