Alexander Yakovlevich Golovin ( Russian Александр Яковлевич Головин ; born February 17 . Jul / 1. March  1863 greg. In Moscow ; †  17th April 1930 in Detskoje Selo ) was a Russian painter and theater practitioners.

Life

In the period from 1881 to 1889 he graduated from the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture , initially in the field of architecture , but later in the field of painting under the direction of Prjanischnikow , Makowski and Polenov . At the same time, he attended art academies and studios in Paris , including the Académie Colarossi and the Académie Vitti .

Until 1901 he lived in Moscow, later in Saint Petersburg and in Detskoe Selo (today Pushkin ).

Golovin became an active member of the Mir Iskusstwa artists' association , designed interiors and furniture together with his colleague Korowin , participated in the design of the Russian pavilion for the World Exhibition in Paris 1900 and the hotel restaurant Metropol in Moscow from 1900 to 1903.

In 1912 he was appointed a member of the Petersburg Art Academy . Golovin died in Detskoye Selo in 1930 at the age of 67.

Like most of the well-known decorators, he worked a lot in the theater environment. In 1900 he celebrated his first successes here. In 1901 he was responsible for the opera Pskowitjanka by Rimsky-Korsakow . A year later he was invited to Saint Petersburg and was appointed director of the tsarist theater for life. Here he created some larger colorful stage decorations. Over the years of his theatrical work he was responsible for the stage performances of the works of Bizet , Gluck , Ostrowski , Lermontow and many others. In Paris he worked, among other things, on the opera Boris Godunow by Mussorgsky .

Golovin mainly worked in tempera and pastel . He created colorful landscape paintings , but also portraits . His painterly work is assigned on the one hand to modernity , on the other to the beginnings of impressionism .

Illustrations and graphics

The book illustrations for the works of ETA Hoffmann , which he created in 1922, can be attributed to this creative circle.
